I have a back-burner project about a group of people involved in a really big movement. The project needs a lot more development, but I know their three tenets:

  1. You can’t do it all by yourself. We have to do it together.
  2. You can’t do it all at once. We have to do it bit by bit.
  3. Just because something is small, doesn’t make it not worth doing.

Welcome to this month’s tikkun olam open thread. Share with us all the things you’ve done to repair the world. If you’ve helped out with a cause or an individual person, if you’ve donated money or goods, if you’ve improved your own life in a way that will rebound on others, or if you’re planning on doing those things in the upcoming weeks, please tell us about it.

And remember tenet #3 above. Even small deeds are worth doing, and worth sharing.

I have been working on a novel in which four queer disabled teen girls, three of whom are of color, kick ass and learn magic. It's stalled for a while while I get over myself (I screwed up big-time sketching out one of the protagonists, and I've redrawn her to avoid the issue but I haven't actually written more than a handful of words related to this novel since) and while I plan out the action plot better. But I am going to do this thing.

I have been designing a tarot deck. It's called the Transgender Tarot. Card 0 of the Major Arcana (which I'll draw today), the Seeker, will feature a genderqueer person, skin tone Crayola color "mahogany", dancing in/with eir wheelchair.

I have been and shall continue to be actively being kind and helpful, to myself and to other people.

Assuming nothing goes utterly balls-up, I am adopting a kitty! This will make life better for Thea-kitty (who needs to be an only cat), for the other cats in Thea's current household (who will no longer be being attacked every time Thea catches a glimpse of them), for Thea's current people (who will no longer have to deal with keeping Thea and the other cats separated), for me (emotional support animal, 'nuff said), and hopefully for a bunch of other people (because if having Thea as my ESA works as intended, I'll have a lot more cope for things like being actively kind and helpful to other people).

Welcome to this month’s tikkun olam open thread.

I don't feel that I did very much this month: in terms of politics, attended a ward committee meeting and a broader community meeting on the state Democratic party platform plus one Tax Rally and one March for Science.

Brought food to the monthly food collection. . .

This month, of course, there will be two. There's the one at my church as always, and the mail carriers one on the 13th.

I comforted a grieving friend. I cared for my child and my partners and myself. I made an activist haggadah for our Passover Seder. I taught teens about writing and editing, and conducted an outlining seminar for my Patreon patrons that people apparently found really helpful. I donated to good causes.

Ran a rather intense seder for family and friends and neighbors, plus a kids' seder a few days later. Donated to a couple of organizations doing useful work, and finally got my act together to push various donations of clothes, food, and diapers (shelters always need lots) out the door to the relevant organizations. Marched for science. Released into the wild a book about community survival and rebuilding, talked about those things in related blog posts, and wrestled with edits on the sequel. Hugged and fed kids, and explained in toddler terms why making our town a sanctuary city is important.

I can't march (or even walk very far), and I don't have a lot of money. However, I have been giving what I can, even if it's only $5 at a time, to support various political activities. In particular I'm interested in the 2018 House races.
