When I posted asking about this back at the beginning of the year, Kat Feete pointed me at Patricia C. Wrede's "LEGO theory," which hits some of the points I was thinking about, though not all of them. This kind of craft advice isn't quite non-existent, but it seems to be vanishingly rare for some reason.
